The M-Power Program, organized by Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Broward County is:

  • A free, voluntary home program for women who are pregnant or have a baby under one year old.
  • For moms living in Broward County who may feel anxious, sad, or have trouble bonding with their baby.
  • Provides help through counseling, parenting classes, case management, and support groups.
  • Services are in both English and Spanish.

What is Maternal Depression?

  • Maternal depression is sadness or anxiety that can happen during pregnancy or after childbirth.
  • Affects 10-20% of new mothers in the first year after birth.
  • Some moms feel ashamed or guilty and may hide their feelings, thinking they “should be happy.”
  • They worry others might think they aren’t good parents.

Baby Blues or Real Depression?

  • “Baby blues” are normal and usually go away within a few weeks after birth.
  • Maternal depression lasts longer and can begin during pregnancy or up to a year after the baby is born.
  • It affects health, energy, and emotions, making it hard to feel well and take care of daily needs.

Signs of Maternal Depression

  • Feeling very sad or hopeless
  • Constant tiredness or lack of energy
  • Worrying a lot about the baby
  • Anxiety and stress that feel overwhelming

How Do I Qualify?

  • Must be pregnant or have a child under one year old.
  • Must live in Broward County.
  • Have signs of emotional distress, like anxiety or depression.

Common Symptoms

  • Physical problems like headaches, chest pain, or fast heartbeat.
  • Scary thoughts of hurting yourself or your baby.
  • Hard time feeling connected or bonded with your baby.

M-Power Program Services

  • In-Home Counseling:
    • Counseling that comes to you, in the comfort of your home.
  • In-Home Parenting Classes:
    • Learn tips for taking care of your baby and yourself.
  • Referrals:
    • Connects you with other resources you may need.
  • Case Management:
    • Support for setting up and keeping appointments.
  • Support Groups:
    • Meet other moms for understanding and encouragement.
