Be prepared for an emergency.
If you think you or a family member may need a special needs shelter, take these steps to make sure you are ready before an emergency!
To stay in a special needs shelter, you must meet these basic criteria:
- You have special medical needs.
- Your care needs are more than the basic first aid provided at general shelters.
- Your health is stable and can be safely managed with the shelter’s staff, equipment, and resources.
Important Reminder:
- Having a disability does NOT always mean you need a special needs shelter. Some people with disabilities can stay safely in a regular shelter.
- The best places to shelter are:
- With friends or family.
- In a safe building.
- Outside of the evacuation area.
How to Register:
- Contact your local Office of Emergency Management to see if you qualify for a special needs shelter.
- Register in advance so your county can help you prepare and provide more information.
- When you complete your basic disaster plan, you’ll get information about your local Office of Emergency Management automatically.
