Special Needs Shelters

Topic:

  • Special Needs

Be prepared for an emergency.

If you think you or a family member may need a special needs shelter, take these steps to make sure you are ready before an emergency!

To stay in a special needs shelter, you must meet these basic criteria:

  • You have special medical needs.
  • Your care needs are more than the basic first aid provided at general shelters.
  • Your health is stable and can be safely managed with the shelter’s staff, equipment, and resources.

Important Reminder:

  • Having a disability does NOT always mean you need a special needs shelter. Some people with disabilities can stay safely in a regular shelter.
  • The best places to shelter are:
    • With friends or family.
    • In a safe building.
    • Outside of the evacuation area.

How to Register:

  • Contact your local Office of Emergency Management to see if you qualify for a special needs shelter.
  • Register in advance so your county can help you prepare and provide more information.
  • When you complete your basic disaster plan, you’ll get information about your local Office of Emergency Management automatically.

Contact your local emergency management office to find out more about special needs shelters and what is required to register.
