Riding a bike is a common form of transportation.
Make sure you can keep yourself safe by knowing the rules and your rights as a bicyclist!
Bicycles Are Vehicles
- Bicyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as motorists.
- Sharing the road with respect benefits everyone.
Helmet Safety
- Head injuries cause 75% of cycling deaths.
- Wearing a helmet can prevent serious injuries.
- Helmets are required by law for cyclists under 16 but recommended for all.
Riding Under the Influence
- Riding a bike while intoxicated is dangerous and illegal.
- Delayed reactions and blurred vision increase risks.
- You can be arrested for cycling under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Rules of the Road (Section 316.2065)
- Obey all traffic signals and signs, just like cars.
- Only carry the number of people your bike is made for.
- Keep at least one hand on the handlebars at all times.
Lighting
- Use a white front light visible from 500 feet and a red rear light and reflector visible from 600 feet between sunset and sunrise.
- Additional lighting is allowed and encouraged for extra visibility.
Roadway Position
- Ride as close to the right curb as possible, except when:
- Passing another vehicle.
- Making a left turn.
- Avoiding hazards.
- A lane is too narrow for cars and bikes to share safely.
- Ride single file unless on sidewalks or when two bikes can safely ride side-by-side in one lane.
Using the Full Lane
- Cyclists can use the entire lane if:
- The lane is too narrow for safe passing with a three-foot buffer.
- Traffic conditions allow it without creating hazards.
- Consider speed limits and congestion to avoid obstructing traffic.
Tip: Always stay visible, alert, and follow the law to ensure safety for yourself and others.
