- Mother-Baby
Breastfeeding can be wonderful, but it can also come with some discomfort. This post shares helpful tips to manage common breastfeeding pains like soreness, engorgement, and tender lumps. Read on to learn how to prevent and treat these issues so you can keep breastfeeding comfortably for you and your baby!
Preventing Soreness
- Soreness can happen, but it’s not normal. A good latch helps prevent it!
- If nipples are sore:
- Start feeding on the least sore side.
- Use a cold pack (wrapped in a cloth) on your nipple for a few minutes before feeding.
- Apply a small amount of lanolin cream made for breastfeeding moms.
- If soreness gets worse or you have cracks, call a breastfeeding educator for help.
Full or Hard Breasts (Engorgement)
- Some fullness is normal, but too much can make breastfeeding hard.
- To prevent engorgement:
- Make sure your baby is latching on correctly.
- Breastfeed 10 to 12 times a day.
- Let your baby finish one breast before switching to the other.
- If your breasts feel too full:
- Use a warm cloth or take a warm shower before feeding.
- Gently massage your breasts and hand-express some milk to soften them.
- If needed, use a breast pump to help your baby latch.
- If the problem doesn’t get better in 24 hours, call a breastfeeding educator.
Tender Breast Lump (Plugged Duct)
- A small, sore lump in your breast could mean a milk duct is blocked.
- To prevent it:
- Wear a comfortable, non-tight bra (avoid underwire).
- Change breastfeeding positions often.
- Massage any lumpy areas while feeding.
- If you have a plugged duct:
- Apply a warm cloth and gently massage before feeding.
- Start feeding on the sore side first.
- Rest as much as possible.
- If the lump stays for 2-3 days or you get a fever, see a doctor.
Breast Infection (Mastitis)
- Signs include redness, soreness, fever, and flu-like symptoms.
- What to do:
- Keep breastfeeding! It helps clear the infection.
- Put a warm cloth on the sore area before feeding.
- Drink lots of water and rest.
- See a doctor if you feel sick for more than a day. Some antibiotics are safe while breastfeeding.
