Exercise for Kids

Topic:

  • Exercise

Exercise and staying active is important for kids and teens to grow strong, stay healthy, and feel their best.

Different ages need different amounts and types of physical activity.

Here’s what you should know to help children stay active and happy!

For Kids Ages 3-5:

  • Young children should be active throughout the day to help their bodies grow and develop.
  • Parents and caregivers can encourage fun, active play like jumping, dancing, or riding a tricycle.

For Kids and Teens Ages 6-17:

  • Aim for 60 minutes or more of activity every day.
  • Include different types of activities:
    • Aerobic Activities:
      • Do activities that make the heart beat faster, like walking, running, or biking, most days.
      • At least 3 days should include more intense activities like fast running or sports.
    • Muscle-Strengthening Activities:
      • Build strength by climbing, doing push-ups, or playing tug-of-war at least 3 days a week.
    • Bone-Strengthening Activities:
      • Help build strong bones by jumping, hopping, or running at least 3 days a week.

Making Activity Part of Daily Life:

  • Kids might already be getting enough activity without realizing it! Walking to school, playing at recess, or joining a sports team are great ways to stay active.
  • Younger children often strengthen muscles naturally by climbing trees, playing on a jungle gym, or doing gymnastics.
  • Teens might enjoy adding structured activities like weightlifting or practicing with a sports team.

How to Recognize Activity Levels:

  • Moderate activity makes kids breathe harder and their hearts beat faster. It might feel like a 5 or 6 on a scale of 0-10. Activities like walking to school with friends count!
  • Vigorous activity feels harder, like a 7 or 8. Running, playing tag, or biking fast are good examples.

Encourage Fun and Variety:

  • Activities should be enjoyable and fit a child’s age and interests.
  • Let kids try different games, sports, or hobbies to find what they love.
  • School-based activities like P.E. class and recess can help kids meet their daily goals.

Remember, being active is not just about exercise—it’s about playing, exploring, and having fun!

Staying active is one of the best ways to support a child’s health and happiness.
