Why Water Safety Matters

Drowning is a leading cause of unintentional death for children, especially those ages 1 through 4 in Florida. It happens quickly and silently, often within moments of distraction.

Where Drownings Happen

  • Infants: Most often in bathtubs or buckets containing just a few inches of water.
  • Children (1–4 years old): Home swimming pools are the most common drowning locations.
  • Ages 5 and Older: More likely to drown in natural bodies of water like lakes, rivers, or the ocean.

Each water environment presents unique safety risks, but many safety precautions apply across all settings.

Remember: Water safety is everyone’s responsibility. Stay vigilant, educate your family, and take advantage of resources like swimming lessons to keep your loved ones safe.
